Omar El Yazidi: "Encouraging and infuriating at the same time
"Above all, I was not fighting against just anyone: Cheick Cissé was the Olympic champion of the -80kg in Rio. Now he has moved up to heavyweight, he is winning everything at the moment. Already a month ago in Rome, I lost in the quarter-finals to him, being dominated throughout the fight. Knowing that he is extremely explosive and very flexible in the face, I intended to neutralize his actions and to hurt him very much on each blow to break his intentions. The strategy worked, I gave more blows but I simply lacked accuracy and, in the end, the place in the next round is played on a few points, even on warnings. I am still very disappointed because I did the whole fight, I felt that he was overwhelmed by the events but he knew how to put the important points when it was necessary... I would have almost preferred to take a knockout. I would have preferred to be knocked out and to lose, knowing that I don't have the level, than to have a fight like this one where I dominate him from A to Z and which is based on a handful of details... In short, it's encouraging and annoying at the same time, especially as I wanted to shine for this first Grand Prix in France, as my family and friends were in the stands, and as I felt in good shape. My first round was a little bit complicated because I fought against a Korean with an incredible technique, but yes, I felt really good on this second round. It's up to me to further improve my physical preparation by building more muscles before starting the rest of the year and preparing myself for 2024.
